Last week I had a bit of a different day, where Keith a rather lovely photographer came to the workshop to take some pictures.
The day started with me having my hair done in anticipation of having my photo taken, thanks to Claire from CJ & Co Hair and beauty, one of my Lady Heyes neighbours. This was actually one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a hairdressers, straight up! Normally the light is so harsh I can see every blemish and I hate it, I never know what its all about and feel very exposed. Bear in mind, I’ve hated going to the hairdressers so much, I’ve been cutting my own hair with the kitchen scissors for the last 6 ish years. So for me to say I actually enjoyed it, is big praise indeed. Of course, it helped that she let me bring my dog, who after having a good look and sniff around, cuddled up on my knee and fell asleep – my little emotional support dog! Claire gave me a bit of a curl, and for once it didn’t fall out within half an hour, she really is a fabulous lady – well worth a visit. While you are there, get your lashes done by Nat too, she gave my rather uncared for brows a good tidy up pre photo shoot! And also let my doggy stay with me, they will be him a wash and brush up in future visits at this rate! (this isn’t normal service of course, so probably best to check before you turn up with your doggo in tow! )

Keith arrived with bags of equipment, lights and cameras and things I don’t understand. He spent some time looking around the workshop, and getting very excited about some of my tools, and got very over excited about how organised my student work desks are. Apparently, it brought back memories of his previous life and job where he worked with systems and processes, the fact that all of my student work desks have the tools in a very precise order was of great interest. This works really well for me, as I know where to direct students to when they are looking for tools – “you will need your ring vice which is right at the front of your desk”, without thinking or looking. It also means that I can tidy the area really quickly, everything has its place. I hear so many jewellers talking about how messy their workspace is, but that doesn’t work for me, and I often think of Andrew Berry (rather famous jewellery maker and teacher – At the Bench) saying that a messy desk costs you time and money.

The day flew by, with lots of photos being taken and ideas thrown about, all this thinking and testing out of things has resulted in a plan for lots more photos, and Keith is coming to visit again in a couple of weeks.
